Jan 30, 1933- Hitler becomes the Chancellor of Germany
March 22, 1933- Nazis set up first concentration camps at Dachau
April 1, 1933- Germans are told not to buy from Jewish shops or businesses
May 10, 1933- Books with ideas contradictory to Nazi beliefs are burned
November 24, 1933- ‘Undesirable’ people (homeless, alcoholic, and unemployed people) are
sent to concentration camps
May 17, 1934- Order was passed that prevented Jewish people from having health insurance
Aug 2, 1934- Hitler becomes the leader of Germany
1934- Jewish newspapers are no longer permitted to be sold on the streets
Sep 15, 1935- The Nuremberg Laws are introduced. These laws took away the Jewish rights of citizenship.
Jan I, 1936- Nazis take away Jew’s right to vote and start to boycott Jewish-owned businesses
Nov 10, 1938- Kristallnacht (‘the night of broken glass’)- Nazis terrorize 30,000 Jews and their businesses through Germany and Austria
Oct 5, 1938- Jews must carry ID cards and Jewish passports are marked with a J
Nov 12, 1938- Jews fined one billion marks for damage caused during Kristallnacht
Dec 18, 1938- German Jews are no longer to head businesses, attend social events, have a driver’s license or car registrations. Jewish children are segregated in their schools and Jews have to follow strict rules and curfews
March 15, 1939- Germany takes over Czechoslovakia and invades Poland
September 1, 1939- France and Britain declare war on Germany, which starts WWII
Nov 23, 1939- Jews in Poland are forced to wear yellow stars so they can be easily identified
Jan 1, 1940- Jews are forced into ghettos and concentration camps- deported to Poland
May 20, 1940- A new concentration camp, Auschwitz, was opened
June 22, 1941- Germany attacks the Soviet Union
Dec 8, 1941- The first death camp, Chelmno, is opened
Dec 18, 1941- Jews continue to be forced into ghettos and they have more rights taken away (can’t leave their houses without permission from the police and they can no longer use public telephones)
Jan 1942- Mass-gassing of Jews begins in Auschwitz and Birkenau
Summer 1942- Jews from all over Europe are sent to ‘death camps’ where they are gassed
June 20, 1942- Nazi officials start to discuss the “Final Solution” which was a plan to kill all european Jews and other non-aryans.
1942- Jews are placed under even more restrictions (can’t… subscribe to newspapers, keep dogs, cats, birds, keep electrical equipment, buy meat, eggs, use public transportation, or attend school)
April 19- May 16 1943- The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising- 750 Jews decided to resist deporation from the Warsaw Ghetto into Treblinka. Eventually they were shot or sent to death camps by the Nazis
Dec 18, 1943- 80-85% of Jews who died in the Holocaust were murdered by this time.
Dec 18,1944- Hitler invades Hungary and deports 12,000 Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz
April 30, 1945- Hitler is defeated and WWII ends in Europe- the concentration camps are liberated and survivors are placed in displaced persons facilities
April 30, 1945- Due to rage associated with defeat, Hitler commits suicide
1946- International Military Tribunal (Judicial Assembly) is created by Britain, France, the United States, and the Soviet Union
1946- Nazil Leaders are tried for war crimes by the Judicial Assembly in Nuremburg
1947- The United Nations establishes a Jewish homeland in Palestine (known as Israel starting in 1948)
