The Holocaust
The Holocaust was the systematic extermination of six million Jews by the the Nazi regime between the 1930s and 40s. Starting in 1933, the first concentration camps were built to imprison Hitler’s political opponents. Hitler was focused on letting the self-justified superior Aryan race reign supreme. Starting in the 1940s, Jewish property was taken by the Nazis, Jews were forced to wear special armbands or yellow stars, and Jewish businesses were destroyed. Jews were not the only race targeted. Romanies, homosexuals, the disabled, and hippies were targeted as well. Ghettos and forced-labor camps were created and Jews were taken from their homes into these establishments. These ghettos allowed the Germans to constantly monitor Jews and facilitate their later deportation into death camps. Between 1942 and 1945, the Nazis began initiating the “final solution.” The final solution was the decision to exterminate all Jews and non-Aryans that were “infecting” Germany with their mere presence. By the end of 1945, six million European Jews were dead and survivors were housed in displaced person camps.
